If you’ve been reading our ongoing reviews for The Council, then you’ll know that it’s been some journey so far. It had an incredible start, with all signs pointing towards it being a potential classic. Episodes 2 and 3, whilst perhaps not quite reaching the heights of the 1st episode, still impressed us no end with the continuation of its intriguing story, wonderful characters and RPG levelling system. So get ready, as it’s time to visit the Manor once more as we prepare not just for Episode 4, but the beginning of the end…
I’m gonna say it straight off the bat – Episode 4 is the best episode of The Council since Episode 1. Now in Episode 3, you were introduced to a possible theory about what’s really going on. In Episode 4, they take that theory and go bat shit crazy with it. It’s hard to describe without getting into spoiler territory, but it’s like the writing team were at a crossroads: play it safe or go the risky path. They’ve chosen the risky path, but for me, it really, really pays off. I’m more gripped than ever about how this is going to end now. And just at the right time, they’ve introduced a few new things to get stuck into.
First off, a new location – the catacombs of Lord Mortimer’s island, where you search for an important item. It’s a welcome break from The Manor, as the game has had you predominantly staying in the same rooms throughout. But the huge change comes in the fact that you gain 2 pretty massive new abilities. Revealing them would spoil the episode big time, but know that I really wish I could be more specific. Honestly, I’m dying to talk to someone about the twists and turns of this episode but I really don’t want to take away the surprise from those gamers out there that are midway through the series.
It’s not just these new additions either. Everything feels ramped up here too. It feels like there are more confrontations, more revelations..more everything. Time is not wasted, and everything in this episode feels like it is for the sole reason of setting up the best conclusion for this story as possible. There aren’t any tedious clue collecting missions (well there is, but it’s very quick if you want it to be) and the developers have ensured that we’re in all killer, no filler territory this time around. So if you’ve not visited The Council yet, there’s never been a more perfect time.
Episode 4 has lifted The Council back up to the heights of its launch episode and has surely set up one hell of a finale. Bring on Episode 5.
