Our overall verdict "silver"

If you’ve read our previous reviews of Episode 1 and 2, then you’ll know that The Council has been impressing us no end with its intriguing story, its wonderful characters, it’s RPG levelling system…we could go on and on. Instead, let’s get stuck into Episode 3, where things are really starting to heat up.

Continuing the spoiler free nature of our previous reviews, we won’t be giving away any major plot points or specifics. And we assume that if you’re reading this, you’ve played the previous episodes, so we’ll keep the recap short: It’s 1793, you play as Louis de Richet, and you’re a member of a Secret Society called The Golden Order. You are invited to a private island off the shores of England by Lord Mortimer, and your mother recently went missing on the island prior to your arrival. You need to find her as soon as possible and get to the bottom of what on earth is going on.

In Episode 3 you are still continuing your search, but you also start by acting on your Mother’s behalf. You’re thrown straight into a dilemma by having a seat at the table of a conference and without naming names, you’re going to have to pick sides. It’s not an easy call. And that’s just for starters. The decisions don’t get any easier. In fact, this Episode throws at you easily the hardest decision you’ve had to make in the whole series so far. It will either cement your relationship with a certain character, or end it permanently and instantly.

It’s not all drama though. Before you reach the end, you’re given a task where you have to find 5 things before you can go onto the final puzzle. I was fully engrossed in the story, itching to find out where it went next, and this shopping list of items scattered all around the manor being demanded was actually a little frustrating. But not as much as the final puzzle. The final puzzle is ludicrously complex, and when I’d finally thought I’d done it, another one started. Luckily, the game gives you a way out of it, but it’s a gruesome alternative. It’s the route I unfortunately had to take, because I stared at the puzzle for what seemed like hours and just couldn’t get it.

Frustrating puzzle aside, The Council more than keeps itself on the right track in Episode 3, with some of the biggest decisions, twists and turns occurring. It feels that The Council is on the home straight, with 2 episodes left to cement its legacy as an outstanding game. Roll on Episode 4.

CONCLUSION
Ripples is an apt name for Episode 3 of The Council, as the ripple effect of some of the series’ most crucial choices lead to huge consequences this time around. All in all, it’s another must visit to the Manor.
