The dark nights are upon us and winter is coming. Fellow drinkers are migrating into the warmth of the pubs and bars on an evening instead of standing outside soaking up the summer sun. This means that the chances of you getting to the pool table with your mates are slim and as for throwing a few arrows at the dartboard you’ve no chance! However none of this is a problem for you if you decide to pick up Sports Bar VR, from Cherry Pop Games.
As the name of the game suggests Sports Bar VR is a virtual reality sports bar where you and up to five of your mates, or complete strangers for that matter, can hang out and play a number of classic pub games such as pool and air hockey. Sports Bar VR also allows you do things that would usually have the bouncers heading your way to boot you out of the establishment such as rearrange the furniture and by that I mean throw bottles across the room.
Using the Move controllers you can teleport around the bar and interact with almost everything; beer mats, bottles, foam fingers, giant dominoes, chairs and more can all be picked up and moved around. This means that you aren’t just confined to playing the games in this virtual environment but we didn’t come to the bar just to mess around stacking items on top of each other did we?
The games that are currently available to play in Sports Bar VR are pool, darts, air hockey, chess, checkers, shuffleboard and skreeball. All of these games are wonderfully recreated and accurately detailed, both pool and dart have different modes to play too. If you’ve played any of them in real life then you already know how play them in the game as the Move controllers replicates the real life movements. With pool you hold the Move controllers like you would an actually cue, with darts you hold them with one controller and throw them with the other. The controls are all really simple and feel natural. Each of the buttons are labelled too should you get stuck. Whilst the main draw of Sports Bar VR is the virtual games the social aspect of the online also plays a big part. There’s something about enjoyable about just chatting with online buddies while you’re standing there wafting a giant foam finger around.
The detailed graphics in Sports Bar VR help to create a believable bar setting. There’s NPC chatting, all the games look really polished and the bar itself looks quite real apart from the floating PSVR headsets that represent the online players. The bar even has TV’s mounted onto the walls that you can watch.
The game might only have eight trophies but if you that want to get them all you must be ready to spend a decent amount of time in the sports bar. This is because the game’s only gold trophy pops when you’ve played 1000 matches either online or against the AI.
Sports Bar VR is an excellent virtual representation of a typical sports bar minus all that jostling to get to the bar malarkey. Pool is clearly the main star of the game, it looks and handles the best out of all the games, but there’s fun to be had playing the other games and just messing around in the bar. The social aspect of been able to have banter in a sports bar with your chums without leaving your home also adds to the enjoyment.
