With a beautiful array of different two and four wheel drives out on PS4, Spintires: MudRunner brings a new concept to the console. Forget about fast speeding super cars or trying to pimp your latest Japanese import, here it’s a different driving experience. Thought you could control a vehicle? Think again.
Slippery when wet
MudRunner is a physics simulator that pits you against the most extreme environments in huge off-road vehicles. There are a large selection of powerful rides to ride, and each one comes with different handling abilities, gear boxes and tyres. MudRunner is a truck drivers heaven. Getting behind the wheel is when you realise just how heavy and awesome driving each truck is. Battling with the terrain and trying to edge forward in the hope to release a wheel that’s entombed in mud is a testing time. Even the simple task of reversing with a massive trailer hooked to your back brings its problems. MudRunner is a thinking mans game.
Vehicles come fitted with winches that help you get out of jail. Sometimes it’s the only way to move forward as life threatening riverwaters swap over your bonnet. It’s a risky business out there. Your task is to get from A to B with the help of a map and compass. You can vehicle hop which is a great way to experience different trucks. As I said earlier there needs to be a bit of thought to how you approach MudRunner. Feeling at times more like a puzzle game, it mixes the element of driving and puzzling, and executes this really well. It’s an addictive drive as you’re not wanting to get beaten by the mud, sludge and waters, nor do you want to fail in your truck handerling skills. There is also a great sense of adventure and freedom that lets you explore, only your limited truck control and the high mud banks are your limits.
If you’ve played this on PC then the PlayStation 4 version has much more to offer including new maps, a new challenge mode and 13 new vehicles. It also comes with a graphic overhaul.
The reason this game works so well is because there’s nothing like it on PS4. It’s a new experience that pertrol heads will appreciate and also gamers after a different type of puzzler. Visually the look of the landscapes, trucks and terrain look so lifelike. There’s a serious amount of detail packed in there. The contrast of different dullish shades make Spintires: MudRunner shine. It has its own look and size 12 steel toe boot stamp written all over it.
If you’re looking for a different motor vehicle experince to get stuck into then look no further. MudRunner delivers excellent physics, a unique look and gameplay which make for a challenging and rewarding drive. While its slow pace may deter some, the more adventurous will enjoy getting to grips with this mudslinger.
