Our overall verdict "bronze"

I can’t remember ever playing a jigsaw puzzle on a console, can you? 70×7 and Kingdom Game’s Puzzle Showdown 4K has now filled in the missing piece and given PS4 its first fully blown jigsaw puzzler. And with it a few twists.

Whether it was a ten piece wooden Humpty Dumpty effort or a thousand piece Thomas Kinkade pastoral masterpiece, we’ve all completed a jigsaw at some point in our lives. But how does this play out on a console? Very well as it turns out. Puzzle Showdown 4k replicates all the fun minus the box, the puzzle dust at the bottom of it and that last annoying missing piece.

First off, to tempt you into a game are some stunning looking jigsaws. There are over 100 ultra HD puzzles to choose from. With 15 different categories including animals, art, nature and water, it’s not short on pictures and themes to select. Jigsaws have 28, 60, 112, 252 or 510 pieces and each come with a lovely relaxing audio which spans over 5 hours worth of music. Each game can be played in single player or local multiplayer with up to 4 people. You can also save games which is handy if you just want to dip in and whittle away at one of the bigger piece sets.

Pieces interlock with ease and the control system helps the game flow. You can turn off the rotation mode for an easier experience (handy if you have a younger player wanting to join in). There’s also a competitive side to the game too. Points are awarded for accuracy, speed and strategic placement which, bizarrely, creates a fun multiplayer game. Also there’s a piece count display showing who’s knocking out the jigsaw pieces the quickest. Losers have to put the kettle on.

Puzzle Showdown 4K is a faultless experience, with sharp bright graphics and a chilled soundtrack. As jigsaws go I can’t really expect any more from such a game. Okay it may primarily appeal to jigsaw aficionados, but it’s going to gain big attention from the trophy hunters as it’s a doddle to complete. The timed trophy of completing a 510 piece set in under 2 hours can be done with a friend in around 45 mins and all other trophies including the Platinum are gained with extreme ease.

Conclusion

Puzzle Showdown 4K is a gorgeous looking game and can be enjoyed even more with a 4K set up. The competitive multiplayer mode shakes things up and brings a nice twist to a classic game. Jigsaws – not just for grannies, you bet.
