Cartoony twin stick mayhem boost’n’blasts its way onto Nintendo Switch as developers, Chasing Carrots release top down buggy shooter, Pressure Overdrive. Don’t let the kiddish look of this shooter on wheels deceive you, the pressure is most certainly on. It’s time to prevent Count Soap from powering his Uber-Spa with stolen water and it’s a whacky old race to the finish. Let’s don on the snorkel and take a closer look.
Pressure Overdrive sits you in control of an armed and upgradeable buggy. You’ll need to out shoot and out wit everything that’s thrown at you in a bid to make it to the end of each level. Chaos rains as heaps of different enemies bump and grind their way towards you causing no end of problems. Each bad guy comes armed and they don’t hold back, but that’s nothing, wait till you encounter an end of level boss battle. Pressure Overdrive really puts your thumbs to the test and if you’re wanting a challenging shoot’em up on 4 wheels, then you’ve come to the right place.
Everything looks very polished in Pressure Overdrive and runs super smooth as well. It’s definitely one of Switche’s better looking twin stick shooters. Controlling each buggy and shooting away as you bomb down tight narrow lanes has its moments. Even though there’s little variation to the game, what it does it delivers it well. There’s a good weapon upgrading aspect that makes sticking with Pressure Overload worth while and the satisfaction of defeating a boss is a glorious one. You’re tempted into replaying runs with the offer of missed gold to collect (which can be spent at the store), and the pleasure of having your times slapped up on the online leaderboards.
Pressure Overload comes armed with 30 plus levels over 3 worlds. Adding more content you can race and blast away in Local Co-op, Endless, and Free Play modes complete the package. It has to be said it’s a pretty unique game. While the likes of similar top down experiences like Mantis Burn Racing and BlazeRush hit the mark, Pressure Overdrive has its own thing going on and offers something slightly different.
Guns, 4 wheeled buggies and some tortuous bosses, Pressure Overdrive delivers a decent mash up of entainment in a chaotic and fun way.
