Ever get tired of being the good guy? Well good news, with Nefarious hitting Nintendo Switch you can now be the bad guy anywhere, anytime. It’s a cool premise, but does it deliver a good experience, or is being the bad guy…bad?
Nefarious is a 2D platformer where you make your way through 9 levels (and potentially a few bonus levels) causing chaos, kidnapping princesses and beating up a selection of goody two shoe heroes. The levels are fun, colourful and really varied -you’ll be hopping between different kingdoms, talking to other baddies on your ship and even taking part in a dating show at one point. And as fun as the story is, and as fun as the platforming is, Nefarious has an almighty plus going for it which eclipses both those things: Reverse Boss Fights! I can’t even tell you how cool it is being the massive enemy and trying to trample, punch and hit the little guy beneath you. They are ridiculously fun and if I’m being honest, they keep you sticking with the game. It’s not that the preceding parts of the levels aren’t fun, it’s just that around Level 5 they start getting pretty bloody hard. You can counter this by collecting coins and visiting your on board shop, but you lose coins every time you die, so I found I never quite had enough to actually upgrade anything. It was only as I neared the end that I was actually able to upgrade my health.
As a bad ass villain your armed with a punch and a grenade launcher. Both work well, but the grenade launcher takes a little getting used to. In the later levels there are a ludicrous amount of enemies trying to take you down. Aiming just right takes some serious practise and the best way to practise these sections is to very simple, just do what I did – die and respawn, over and over again. It’s a minor gripe though and definitely not a fault of the game, just something to work on yourself. So all in all, it turns out being the bad guy is pretty cool.
Nefarious is fun, frantic and confirms the age old adage – nice guys finish last. Insert evil laugh here…
