Our overall verdict "silver"

The thrill of the oval track and the razzmatazz of NASCAR Heat Evolution may or may not have got your attention when it first arrived on PS4 last year. Now Monster Games and 704 Games have dug deeper and delivered NASCAR Heat 2, a title that comes with big improvements all round, a lengthy career mode and, of course, heaps of crash, bang, wallop.

If you’ve never raced a NASCAR race you may have thought it’s about simply holding down the gas pedal and turning left. Think again. There is repetition, but there is so much to NASCAR Heat 2 that will keep your foot on the gas pedal and want to keep racing.

Behind the Visor

Your journey starts via Hot Seat offers. Here you get to race in the truck series with no particular team. Once you’ve completed a set amount of races in the calendar you’ll be head hunted and offers of a contract flood in. NASCAR Heat 2 is not short on content. Race wise you have the minor leagues of Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series and then the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. As well as career, quick race and championship, the challenges offer lots of variety, tracks and vehicles to get stuck into. Here there are 29 races with a set of goals to achieve such as win a race while low on fuel or start from mid pack and win a race. These challenges are another big part of NASCAR Heat 2 and really spice things up nicely.

NASCAR Heat 2 is an entertaining ride. Picking off opponents one by one as the never ending stream of trucks appear ahead of you is a rewarding feeling. Travelling sideways at over 150 mph also has its moments too. Knowing one wrong move or a clip to another vehicle’s back end could end your race makes each action a wary one. It’s realistic racing all the way; slam the breaks and smoke billows out, sparks fly if you’re sandwiched between cars, and it’s carnage if there’s a 20 car pile up ahead. Banging into others cars and having incidents with other race drivers does have consequences. It’s not all fist bumps after a race. Getting a verbal warning from a fellow driver after a race is pretty cool. Such bad moves turn aggressive actions into making rivals, who may turn on you later. Be careful out there.

Cars feel heavy and roar to life, and come with impressive tracks to rocket down. Not only is NASCAR Heat 2 brought to life by its exciting races, there’s also heaps going on in-between. You’ll meet real life NASCAR drivers via video footage with snazzy cut scenes and pumping sleazy American tunes rolling out. It’s a loud and lively visually attractive affair, and so it should be.

Buckle up, it’s going to be a wild ride

If you like your online racing then NASCAR Heat 2 does not disappoint. The 40 car online multiplayer is a blast. It’s busy on there too. You may not find every seat taken in a full 40 car race, but I easily took part in races with 25 plus online opponents, plus there are heaps of lobbies waiting to shunt into. Overall a great online experience is to be had. Keeping it offline, you have split-screen play if you want to fall out with a buddy NASCAR style.

Conclusion

NASCAR Heat 2 is both thrilling and engrossing. It does come with a repetitive quality, but once you’ve taken the leap, this NASCAR ride is a sweet one. Its polished look and feel will definitely attract newcomers to the game. If you’ve not played NASCAR then now is the time to chase the leader.
