Our overall verdict "bronze"

Released on PlayStation 4 back in 2014, Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition now gives Switch players a taste of its old school retro side scrolling action. With fine pixel art and a glossy look, Tribute Games’ latest version is looking rather good.

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition is a mission based platformer shooter with the main hub screen letting you choose different options. Here you’ll also find a crew of geniuses that will upgrade and customize your weapons, upgrade armour and generally have your back like a good team should. Upon selecting which pixel character you want to play as (there are four in total), you’re airlifted into action and it’s up to you and your quick fingers to complete each mission. Basically, an evil organisation named CLAW needs to be eliminated and it’s up to you and your crew members to save the world. Easy, right?

Each mission has set objectives which are played against the clock. Complete the objectives and you’re winged back to base camp a hero. Enemies come in many forms, from angry thugs tooting machine guns, robots, and even wildlife make an appearance too. Once eliminated, these guys drop various items which can be picked up and used at the main hub to upgrade the aforementioned weapons, armour and your abilities. You have two slots that can house media packs, grenades and explosives too. So along with your firearm and knife, you have a lot of opportunities to run around and blow stuff up.

Early missions feel great. Running, jumping, shooting and plunging your knife into unfortunate enemies feels good – it’s a decent rampaging time. After time though there is a representative that kicks in, but the action keeps rolling at a decent pace to keep you in the game. The levels in Mercenary Kings actually feel surprisingly spacious – there’s a lot to discover and lots packed into each one. Played on the go everything looks pixel perfect and an easy game to keep jumping back into.

If you’re looking for multiplayer, then you and your squad have come to the right place. Mercenary Kings offers couch co-op and online play. And with a smallish price tag, Mercenary Kings is a big adventure waiting to throw yourself into.

Conclusion

A 2D frantic action side scroller that demands further inspection, Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition is a chaotic bend of action, platforming and mayhem. With its gleaming retro pixels Tribute Games have again done us proud.
