It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for Luftrausers to arrive. We first posted news of its impending release just under a year ago. The wait is over. It’s finally here. It’s time to Raus – and my God does it feel good.
In Luftrausers, you’re a pilot engulfed in a torrent of arcade style aerial combat. Seriously, everyone is trying to take you down. You don’t have time to admire the clouds or enjoy the inflight entertainment. The aim of the game is to blow everyone up or you’ll get blown up. You’ll last seconds. It’s not just those in the air you need to worry about either – there are battleships on the seas shooting up at you too. The sky is painted with bullets throughout and you need to somehow find a way to survive amidst the chaos.
The controls are simple: Up to launch, directional buttons to turn, to fire. To repair yourself when you’re damaged, simply stop firing and hold on for dear life. Your aim, apart from not getting smashed to smithereens, is to score as many points as possible in order to level up, as well as to climb up the leaderboards. You also have missions to beat. To unlock these, you’ll have to gain skulls by fulfilling certain objectives – kill a certain amount of enemies, get a certain amount of maxi combos, sink a battleship and so on. You can customise your Rauser in the Hangar as more things become available to you to better suit your style, such as adjusting your weapon, body and engine power. And that’s what Luftrausers gets so right – it keeps everything simple. The controls, the upgrade system…the whole concept of Luftrausers is so simple that it shouldn’t be as good as it is. But it is that good. It’s been incredibly worth the wait. Before you know it, you’ll be replacing every superlative with Luftrausers:
“How was your day?”
“My day? It was LUFTRAUSERS!”
There’s so much I could say about how much I like Luftrausers. The gameplay, the look, the music…it’s all so well done. But instead of me going on and on about it, I don’t want to keep you from it. Just buy it. You won’t regret it.
Luftrausers is available from today. Act accordingly.
