Apple and cheese, chocolate and meat, Morgan Freeman and that Justin Bieber song. Just some of the things that are polar opposites and shouldn’t work together, but for some reason when put together they do. Bacon Bandit Games (probably the best developer name ever) have teamed up with publishers Digerati Distribution to combine Scrabble and an RPG. The outcome of this is Letter Quest Remastered and boy does it work.
The Grim Reaper, Grimm to his friends, has a serious case of the munchies that only a pizza or seven will quell, so he sets off on a journey to get some. This journey is broken into stages and each is full of monsters that block Grimm’s path. To defeat them you’ll need to use some serious word play. At the bottom of the screen you are presented with fifteen lettered tiles and must create words using three or more letters. Each letter is valued by its rarity (like in scrabble) and is indicated by having bronze, silver and gold coins on the tiles. Using these letters will do a varied amount of damage and give you more coins. So a word containing a “Q” will do more damage than a word with an “E”. Coins you collect don’t carry over through the stages, so if you see the Old Merchant it is wise to buy items from him. Gems do carry over, as they are the game’s currency.
Using the gems you obtain you can purchase various upgrades and items from the store so that you can beef Grimm up to make him a more formidable fighter. As well as this you can also equip Grimm with a variety of different books that do a number of things like do more damage if you use double letters like battle or green, or give you a health boost if you use a certain letter. If you find yourself wanting more gems you should check out the seventy challenges as once you complete them you are well rewarded.
To add longevity to the game, each stage has three gold stars and a crystal star to obtain. The first two gold stars are for completing the stage and a time trial, the third is a special challenge like using twelve words or less or using words over a certain length that do no damage. The crystal star is ultra-tough as all the monsters are much harder and have special conditions so it’s probably worth revisiting these when Grimm is fully tooled up. The game also offers an Endless mode where you try to score as high a score as possible before you die.
Letter Quest Remastered is a charming RPG with cartoon-like graphics that uses an easy to play word game to deliver its hit points. Both elements of this game work and fit together seamlessly and if we were playing Scrabble then Bacon Bandit Games have created a triple-word score.
