Jamestown+ is not your average vertical shooter. When I first loaded this up it took me a few moments to realise what the hell was going on. I needed a few valuable seconds to get my head around what I had just stepped into. This shooter has been to the school of Monty Python, doused in charm and given a music score Andrew Lloyd Webber would have sold his soul for. Anyone who loves their bullet hell shooters are in for a short sweet ride to Mars and back. PC gamers will know Jamestown already, but now Final Form Game’s 2011 shooter comes to PlayStation 4 with new content, new levels and an interesting extended game title. The +.
Jamestown+ is a 4 player co-op adventure which can also be played solo. Set in an alternative 17th century, this is a top down shooter that plays out like no other due to the absorbing and incredible story that awaits you. If you thought all shooters were the same, think again. This historical adventure is fast and intense, the levels are quick and end with some ridiculously huge alien boss fights. You guessed it, Jamestown+ is wildly over the top, but in a good way. Giant this, crazy that, half the time you can’t put names to the crazy characters you’re shooting at and with the captivating storyline you have a unique indie shooter on your hands.
Scratch that itch on your nose and you’re in trouble but not dead. It’s only a hit to the centre of your craft that can harm you, which is a saviour as action is nonstop. Battles may at first look a little one sided, in their favour, so get your dancing shoes on. But lucky for you Jamestown+ offers some extraordinary versatile and customisable fire power. Heading to the in-game shop there are different upgrades to enable you to do deal more damage. You also have a Vaunt Meter – by blitzing the opposition, golden bolts rain down and collecting these give you extra abilities such as a brief spell of invulnerability and unleashing more damage, and all with the option to keep your combo going for some greater high scores. Trying to destroy as many on-screen enemies as possible is definitely worth your time as scores are logged on the leaderboards.
Controls are very responsive like a good shooter should be and make battles stupidly fun and frantic. The game’s perfect pixel look really stands out and added cut scenes make the experience one you may not have expected. On screen most objects can be blown to pieces making this a very satisfying shooter.
The downside is Jamestown+ is not a huge game. The way to progress is having to return to the first levels and beating them on a higher difficulty. This is where the challenge lies, and with a lack of credits the game becomes a pretty testing one. Because of the assortment of upgradable craft available, return plays are hugely enjoyable with the fun being finding the combination that works for you. There are twenty-eight trophies on offer and also a Platinum. Just remember it’s no pushover. There are two completely new levels that the PC version never had: Mars: The Black Garrison of Phobos, and the Shifting Sands of Deimos. To keep you further interested Jamestown+ also comes with The Gunpowder, Treason, & Plot as part of its added DLC.
I touched on the soundtrack earlier but, boy, Jamestown+ has THE most epic music score I’ve ever heard in any game. A wow moment that transcends anything you can imagine and brings the whole game to life. Hats off to acclaimed composer Francisco Cerda. Don those wireless headsets or turn up that subwoofer – don’t worry about the neighbours wondering what the hell you’re watching; just sit back and enjoy.
Jamestown+ is a short and challenging shoot ‘em up with a heap of different ships and upgrades to keep you coming back. Because of the insane story and action this indie shooter deserves your attention and a worthy place in your download section.
