It’s time to get serious and put your Ninja cat skills to good use as the latest brawler claws our way onto consoles. Welcome to the mayhem.
Your mission, should you wish to accept, is to rescue your Master. He’s been kidnapped and it’s up to you and your claws to rumble through this 2D side scrolling beat em up. The aptly named Pussycat mode is the best starting place as here friendly checkpoints line the route to free your Master. It’s still no push over, but having 4 cats in local co-op mode landing chops looks to even things out. Not having the chance to enrol any extra cats at the time of review, I can only guess having extra pussy power will help. The boss fights have health bars that seem to last an eternity. I only beat Ratamaster by a whisker. Dying while trying to defeat such a boss sees you plunged back a level before you’re allowed another pop. Ouch. Despite this, Claws of Furry kicks out a lively and colourful brawler; coupled with the furry animal theme there’s a lot to like.
Action rolls fast; landing uppercuts and pounding on the different array of bad mice all of which ascend on you from all directions makes for an enjoyable cat fight. A weak and heavy attack work well against the smaller dudes but need work against more troublesome folk. You also have an ability to throw fish if your martial arts skills need a break. Dispose of an enemy and you’ll be gifted with a health gem, but beware because health does take a bashing and such gems don’t replenish you for long. There’s no nine lives going on here, it’s all about quick wits and snappy fingers.
Moves are sweet – you’re a cat, remember, so dashing and double jumping see you make use of the whole screen. Jumping off roof tops, ledges and bouncing off stunned enemies tends to happen in a blur.
The 50 levels over 4 different environments look vibrant and beautiful. Developers Terahard have gone for a full on technicolour blast of neon brightness while backgrounds with simple shading and lighting create a moody backdrop.
As well as the aforementioned Pussycat mode you also have Rogue-like and Arena to venture into. And of course any top cat needs unlockable outfits to strut their stuff in, it’s all here. Along with the 4 player local co-op and single player mode, Claws of Furry offers a decent package.
Claws of Furry is a solid platform brawler with a meowtain of mice to pit your Ninja skills against. If you’re wanting a frantic and relentless fighting game then here you go. Leave your kendo sticks at home, Claws of Furry does things different. Hi-Ya!
