Our overall verdict "silver"

Binaries is a game where things get really, really hard as you play with a pair of balls. No don’t worry, we’re not venturing into the porn world. Binaries is actually the creation of Ant Workshop, and I’ve deliberately described the premise of the game in an indecorous way, just to get a cheap laugh. Yep, my self esteem is that low. The good news is Binaries is a lot better than my introductions.

In Binaries, your goal is to guide two different coloured balls from A to B. They are both in a different area of the level. Now when you jump with the blue ball in mind, the orange one will jump in exactly the same fashion, at the same time. The problem is there’s a spike in front of the orange one, but not the blue. So Binaries is a whole host of things. It tests your puzzle solving skills, it tests your reflexes, it tests your ability to hold your nerve, it tests your co-ordination skills and (very deliberately) tests your patience as well. You see Binaries has been described as a ‘controller-smashingly tough platformer’, which is a very accurate summary. It’s so tough in fact, that it will make you want to not only smash your Pro controller, but also unplug your Switch and smash that as well. Seriously.

But despite all that – you should totally play it. I know that seems odd, but the game is so simple yet so effective. Despite the games 100+ levels being short and at first glance simple (ha!), it’s the challenge that makes Binaries stand out. Not only that, but there are some excellent touches thrown in as well. For one, the game is actually really funny. Despite my frustrations, text would pop up and make me laugh if I was struggling. Another really cool idea is that the music (which is excellent) will drop out if you’re in a a section where you really need to concentrate. It’s things like this that make Binaries really impressive. I mean, if it’s this hard to play…imagine how hard it was to make!

CONCLUSION
Don’t let the difficulty of Binaries put you off. It’s intelligent, rewarding and not like anything else on the Nintendo eshop.
